23HAM is a creative co-working space in Berkeley. It is a place to work. A place to socialise. A place to learn, teach and collaborate. 23HAM is a more than just a place to co-work, its a place to co-create.

What is co-creating?

Well, its a lot like co-working, just more fun. It’s a place for you to bring your best. Whether that’s a paintbrush, a laptop or just yourself. Once you get here, the possibilities are endless. You can make, think, write, learn, discuss, critique, relax, catch up on internet time. There is studio space, office-like space, kitchen space, darkroom space, outdoor space, outer space, just lots of space. Free coffee, tea and refreshments. Free wireless internet. Free couches, tables and chairs. It’s all here for you to make awesome with.

Who is co-creating for?

Creative people. Or people who thrive in creative environments. Artists, writers, designers, musicians, freelancers, part-timers, students, hobbyists, crafters, thinkers, nomads, sculptors, conversationalists, photographers, The Fonz, silkscreeners, printers, drawers, scholars, adventurers, mentors, scientists, computer nerds, mystics, home-business people, animators, realtors, marketers, self-starters, homemakers, illustrators, telecommuters, chefs, pet-sitters, entrepreneurs, inventors, early birds, nine to fivers, developers, internerds, consultants. You get the point. All kinds of people. Especially ones who contribute a new perspective.

When can I start?

Today! 23HAM recently opened as a co-creating space and is looking for great new members. So some days there might be less people here, some days there might be more. Less people = more space for you to work. More people = more community to interact with. It’s a win-win.

Why does this exist?

We are creatives who are determined to make this world a more creative place. We are young and ambitious and know that we were not alone. So in 2008 we set out to set up the ideal environment in which we wanted to continue making our work. That vision was a non-existent meld of an art studio, a coffee shop, a library, a university media center, a science laboratory, an alternative school and our comfy apartment (with a real kitchen for those all-day work sessions.) This is NOT a corporate investment project or a cookie-cutter franchise. This is a true bottom-up operation. We use the space just as much as our members.

Does 23HAM have music rehearsal space?

Unfortunately, we do not have dedicated music rehearsal space in our daily shared spaces. We offer afterhours space available by reservation for members and thus may be able to accommodate practicing musicians. Get in touch with us and we’ll see if we can work something out.

But I don’t like to share EVERYTHING.

That’s cool. Sometimes we like our privacy. 23HAM has private studio space available for our Resident Creators. This gives you all perks of the co-space when you want it, plus a key to lock up your goods at the end of the day.
